I run a selection of photographic courses throughout the year both as group sessions and as one-to-one tuition. The courses are done on a friendly and informal basis with much of the learning done out in the landscape. This means that you get chance to try out new tricks and techniques as soon as you learn them.

I always try and tailor courses to the needs of the students on the day. This allows us to progress quickly and efficiently through the curriculum, and also cater to the needs of the students, weather conditions and lighting on the day.

The most popular course is the Entry-level Digital Stills Photographic Course. This includes an introduction to the mechanics of the camera including shutter speeds, Aperture, focal lengths, ISO and how all this applies to modern digital SLR cameras. We then continue on to composition, exposure, the use of graduation filters, tripods, and much more. This, like most the courses run from 9 AM to approximately 1 PM. This is normally as long as most people can happily take in a large amount of new information.

When you come on any of the courses all the students are expected to be suitably equipped for the day ahead, this normally includes staying out for the duration of the course in whatever the weather throws at us, so as this is the Lake District, good waterproofs, walking boots and a packed lunch with a warm drink are advisable.

With the entry-level stills photography courses the equipment does vary but normally most students would have a digital camera (the one that you normally use) with charged batteries, space on your memory cards (spares of both of these are good) a tripod if you have one and also any filters that you currently have. It’s not essential to have all the equipment that is covered in the course, as it’s often quite useful to learn about the equipment before heading out and buying it. If people don’t have equipment on the course I will often try and make sure you get the chance to use some of the ones we have available.

If you have any extra questions or you would like to book on a particular course date then please don't hesitate to contact me on the numbers or email below.

Thank you for looking into Rob Grange Photography courses and I look forward to seeing you soon

Hi Rob Many thanks for your thoroughly enjoyable and expert course today. Plenty of food for thought for photography and a most useful crib sheet. It was a real pleasure and hopefully will lead to me being a more creative and technically aware composer of photographs in future. I will be experimenting! Thanks again, Alison

types of courses

the introductory course takes you from the very basics through to composition, lighting, and understanding how to get the best from your photography this is then done with a reference to peoples photographic preferences so some courses with be set up towards Landscape photography and others portrait, long exposure or macro. you still have the chance to go through all the basics and learn the skills of taking a good photograph.

The evening long exposure courses should be taken after having done the introductory course as we take the skill to a higher level we head out before dusk and cover the principals of what we can achieve with long exposure shots, with a selection on water techniques and if were lucky we might get some sunset photos too. After dark we will start with light painting, in its many different forms, Light painting is a great way to test and extend your understanding of light, light sources and direction. techniques that can help in every field of photography. If the weather allows we will take the techniques that we have covered and then we can do some star trails shots using different techniques.
